Son of Captain and Mrs. Thomas F. Igoe of Summerville, South Carolina.

Thomas Igoe was an 8-year-old boy who sadly passed away from rabies on August 28, 1904. Thomas had been bitten on his upper lip by a Fox Terrier dog about six weeks prior to his death while on a visit to Charleston, South Carolina with his parents. The bite appeared to not give him any trouble, so nothing was thought of the matter. Several weeks later Thomas began getting irritable, easily excited, and appeared to have temporary mental aberrations. In one incident he struck a playmate with his fist so hard that he broke a bone in his hand.

Thomas was taken to a physician who after hearing of the dog bite became alarmed. It was decided that he would be brought to the Pasteur Institute in Atlanta, Georgia for treatment of rabies. Upon their arrival on the morning of August 27, 1904 Thomas was examined by a doctor, who gave his parents the devastating news that there was no hope for stopping the progress of the disease. The ominous symptoms of rabies had already begun, and it was too late for preventative treatment. Thomas was moved to the Tabernacle Infirmary in Atlanta where every effort was made to relieve his suffering during the cruel final stage of the disease. He passed away there on Sunday August 28th at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, just a few weeks before his 9th birthday.

Thomas' death caused much sadness in Summerville and the surrounding area where he was well known and much loved. He was laid to rest on August 30, 1904 in Saint Lawrence Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina.

Rest in peace, Thomas.
