Gustavus H. Thiel was the founder of the Thiel Detective Service in St. Louis. He was born in Russia-Poland to German speaking parents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Busse) Thiel. The family came to America about 1849.

Gustavus (aka George) began his career as a detective working for the Allan Pinkerton Detective Agency in Chicago. He was with Pinkerton's "secret service" in the early years of the Civil War and later served as superintendent of the Pinkerton offices in Chicago. In 1873 he founded his own company in St. Louis. It grew to become a very successful nationwide agency and a rival to the Pinkerton agency.

While living in Chicago, "Gus" married Catherine Stanley, a daughter of Henry Stanley. Their five daughters, Leonora, Florence, Abbie, Edith and Pauline, were raised in St. Louis in the family home on fashionable Lindell boulevard. Catherine died in 1923 and is buried along with four of her daughters in the Robert Louis Niedringhaus lot in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
Gus married Mary Delores Buckley in 1899 and they lived in Chicago until his death in 1907. Mary later married John Joseph Buckley (1863-1923), a theatrical manager. She died in Chicago in 1933 and is buried with Gustavus Thiel in Calvary Cemetery.
