The funeral for Jeannette L. Smidt, 75, of Stewartville, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 27) at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, with Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Mrs. Smidt died Sunday (Jan. 24, 2010) from complications of COPD, following surgery at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she had been a patient for the past 9 days.

Jeannette Leone Swanson was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Mankato, Minn. She moved with her family as a child to Rochester, where she grew up, attended school and graduated from the former Rochester High School in 1952. She married Arnold L. Smidt on Feb. 26, 1955, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, where the Smidts have lived all their married life.

Mrs. Smidt was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and then U.S. West in Rochester for 30 years until retiring in 1992. She was employed at Mayo Clinic in communications and part-time as a hostess/waitress at the Fish House Restaurant in Stewartville for a few years. Mr. Smidt worked in HVAC sales for Girard Steel, Woodruff Co. and Rochester Supply Co., all in Rochester, until retiring in 1998.

Mrs. Smidt was a homemaker and active in her church and community, belonging to both St. John's Ladies Aid and Altar Guild, and held offices in many organizations. She was a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Communications Workers of America. She belonged to both the American Legion Post 164 and VFW Auxillaries in Stewartville. She enjoyed her many friends, cooking, music, cards, traveling, reading and northern Minnesota. She loved her family and her church.

Jeannette's family would like to thank the staffs at Olmsted Medical Center in Stewartville and Rochester, and the staff at Saint Marys Hospital for the wonderful care they provided.

Survivors include her husband, Arnie; three daughters, Becky (Buck) Fredricksen of Stewartville, Marybeth (Norb) Hemann of Stacyville, Iowa, and Amy (Rob) Myhrvold of Stewartville; three sons, David (Diane) of Vermillion, S.D, John (Lisa) of Rockaway Beach, Ore., and Mark (Christa) of Stewartville; 14 grandchildren and 4 step-grandsons; a sister, Marsha Baird of Reseda, Calif.; and a brother, Charles Swanson of Springfield, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Helen Swanson; her sister, Harriet; and brother, Bob.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 26) at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning.

The family suggests memorials to St. John's Lutheran Ladies Aid in Stewartville or to donor's choice.
