In 1850, R.C. McPhail is living with his mother, Judith. By 1860, he was living in Fayette, Mississippi working as a deputy sheriff.

Robert McPhail enlisted on April 1861 as a Private in the Confederate Army, Captain C.S. Coffey's Company D, 19th Mississippi Regiment with Colonel L.Q.C. Lamer commanding. He was discharged at the end of the war on 9 April 1865.

Mrs. Patrricia Ann White married Robert C. McPhail on 3 July 1866 at Simpson County, Kentucky at the home of the bride. Rev. Col. J.S. Scoby officiated. Mrs. White was the mother of three children - Avadna Eveline White, George H. White, and Alexander White.

In 1869, McPhail brought his family to Texas. He was a farmer.

In 1877, Mrs. McPhail appears on the census at Fort Worth, Texas. R.C. McPhail was working for the Singer Sewing Machine company.

In 1887, R.C. McPhail and his wife move to Graham, Texas according to the newspaper account where he is working as a real estate agent.

R.C. McPhail applied for his Confederate Pension on 7 July 1909 at Young County, Texas. L.P. Brooks and H.C. Fields witnessed his statements. R.C. McPhail was discharged on 9 April 1865. In 1909, he was 45 years old. He moved to Texas in 1869. He moved to Graham, Texas December 1888. His occupation was Notary Public and Real Estate Agent.
