Samuel Jerman Allston was the son of Peter Bacot Allston and Marianne Gendron Palmer. He was born in Berkeley County and later moved to Charleston. He married Hepzabah King and had one child Harriet Wilkinson Allston who lived to be one hundred years old. Hepzabah died in 1901 and Samuel placed young Harriet in the care of his sisters. He was an avid outdoors man who loved to hunt and fish. In 1909 he was on a boat on the North Edisto River in South Carolina. The boat began to sink, and he jumped overboard to save two young women. He was successful in saving their lives but drowned himself. His body was never recovered.
