Death of An Aged Citizen
The death of Mr. Joseph E. Dent, sr., which occurred at his home in this city yesterday afternoon at 5 o’clock, removes from our midst an old and honored citizen – a patriarch in years, whose span of life covered a period of usefulness and activity that left its impress on the community indelibly. He had been in failing health for some time, and about a year ago became totally blind. Notwithstanding these severe afflictions he maintained a spirit of cheerfulness that was surprising to those unacquainted with the stronger characteristics of his nature, and amidst all the trials that pressed upon him in his latter days he exhibited a patience and fortitude that was remarkable.
On Sunday afternoon last he was stricken with paralysis. Owing to his advanced age and enfeebled condition it was evident that he could not recover, and his death, while a course of deep grief to his family and friends, was therefore not unexpected. All of his children were present except two sons, Marvin and Tom, both of whom reside in Texas. His end was peaceful.
Deceased was a native of Maryland, but in 1836 came to Georgia and located in Heard county. In 1852 he moved to Newnan, and continued to reside here until his death. He was 82 years of age, and had been twice married. His second wife survives him, together with nine children – five sons and four daughters.
The funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 o’clock, from the Methodist church.
