KEWANEE - W.E. "Bill" Briggs, 84, of Kewanee died at 4:25 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Kewanee Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. The Rev. K. Bruce Rushing will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.

Bill was born on July 24, 1925, in Elmwood, Ill., the son of James L. and Lena (Shoff) Briggs. He married Audrey L. Kermode on July 20, 1947, in LaFayette, Ill.

She survives, as do two daughters, Janel (Philip) DeLathouwer of Kewanee and Cynthia (Gregory) Reis of Quincy, Ill.; a son, Scott K. Briggs of Burlington, Iowa; four grandsons, Tyler DeLathouwer of Kewanee and Connor, Taylor and Cooper Reis, all of Quincy, Ill.; a half brother, Richard Evans of Galva; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Helen Bergren and Mary Quinney.

He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, seeing action on Iwo Jima. He received a Presidential Unit Citation, which was awarded to the assault troops of the Fifth Amphibious Corps for service on Iwo Jima. He also received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

He was employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 38 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the Kewanee American Legion Post 31.

His hobbies included playing golf and bowling.
