Samuel grew to manhood in Marshalltown and Greencastle, Iowa and moved to Elkhart in 1913, where he engaged in farming until his retirement in 1934. He died 29 May 1951, at his home at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 5 days.
On January 20, 1898, he was united in marriage to Thursey Blue, who preceded him in death on 27 Oct 1946. To this union were born seven children. One daughter, Veda, died in September of 1930.
Left to mourn his passing is his present wife, Millie; whom he married in January 1948; his sons, Tracy and Alva, of Elkhart; Roscoe of Madrid; Harley of California; Cecil of Kansas City; and one daughter, Vilda Cory of Elkhart; also fourteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Early in life, he joined the Christian Church at Stanhope, Iowa. At the time of his death he was a member of the Elkhart Christian Church where he transferred his membership when he moved to Elkhart. He was steadfast and loyal to the church of his choice and faithfully served it as elder for over thirty years. His devotion to the church has been an inspiration to his family and friends.
Weep not that his toils are over
Weep not that his race is run,
God grant we may rest as calmly
When our work, like his, is done.
Till then, we yield with gladness
This loved one to him to keep
And rejoice in the sweet assurance
He giveth his loved one sleep
