Oregonian, Thursday, July 4, 1918:

"Charles E. Beebe, of 109 South Jersey Street, died from shock and injuries received yesterday morning, when he was run over by a truck driven by H. A. Brewer, an employee of the Union Fuel Company, at Burlington and Ivanhoe streets, in St. Johns. Both of his legs were crushed. He was taken to the branch police station at St. Johns and died a few minutes afterwards. The body was removed to the morgue.

Mr. Beebe was crossing the street at the intersection, and as he was watching another truck coming in his direction and his hearing was impaired he did not know that the truck driven by Mr. Brewer was coming up behind him. The driver attempted to avoid striking the pedestrian and stopped hi truck within four feet after it hit Mr. Beebe. Following an investigation made by Deputy Coroner Goetsch, it was decided not to hold an inquest.

Mr. Beebe and his family removed to Portland from Hood River about three month ago. He was 70 years old."
