Born April 12, 1918, in Crandon, Wisconsin, to George Palmer and Elizabeth (Johnson) Palmer, Mae Palmer married Gerald Baker, known as "Beano" Baker December 24, 1938.
In 1946, Mae Baker and her husband moved to Newberry, where she owned and operated Mae's Beauty Shoppe for 16 years and continued employment as a cosmetologist at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center until its closure. Mrs. Baker was a lifetime member of the National Cosmetologist Association and former member of the PB&W, the Elks Gazelles, and the American Legion Post Number 74. She was an annual volunteer for the Newberry "Jail and Bail" fundraiser and enjoyed bowling and golfing.
Survivors included a son and his family, Richard and Pat of Belleville, three daughters and their families, Geri Sue and Jim Penix of Hulbert, Penny Boggs of Anchorage, Alaska, and Peggy and Frank Crooms of Milaka, Minnesota; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Baker is preceded in death by her husband, who died January 12, 2000, and by two brothers, and two sisters.
