Born July 4, 1917 in Altamont, IL, son of the late Cecil Baker and Mabel (Graul) Baker, Dr. Baker was raised in St. Louis, MO and graduate of Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. He continued his education at St. Louis University, graduating as third generation in the family from medical school.
Dr. Baker enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and served as a medical corp. officer until his discharge from the Army Reserve in 1953. Following his discharge, he received his board certification in psychiatry and practiced at state operated mental institutions for several years, retiring from the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center in 1983. Dr. Baker was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2929, former volunteer of prison ministry at the Newberry Correctional Facility and volunteer of the Newberry High School Chess Club. His hobbies and interests included reading, playing chess, classical music and an avid St. Louis Cardinal and Green Bay Packer fan.
Besides his parents, Dr. Baker is preceded in death by his first wife Mary "Madine" in 1979 and son Craig in 2004.
Survivors included his wife Joy Willette-Baker of Newberry; children Paul (Sharon) of Winneconne, WI, Kevin of South Bend, IN, Teresa (Elwood) Carl of Marquette, Peter (Debbie) of Lakefield, Mary (Gary) Whitmer of Gladstone, Barbara (Mark) Summersett of L'Anse, John of Goffstown, NH and Jane (Greg) Youngpeter of Newberry; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister Marjorie (Conrad) Fassold of Overland Park, KS.
