He was named Abraham Nathan Slovak at his birth. In his late teens he went to work as a bellhop at the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. His supervisor told him Abe was an old man's name and he was going to be Allen and they would call him Al. His mother called him her little Abey Nathan until she died.
