Simeon Clay Gowans, well-known citizen and Confederate veteran, died at his home off Wilkesboro street on July 26, after a serious illness of two weeks, aged 86. He was the son of Major W. Gowans and Nancy Cheshire Gowans, and was born in Davie county on April 1, 1847. During the War Between the States he served as a member of Company E, 42nd Regiment, known as Kirkland's Brigade. He was married in 1866 to Lucy Ann Bowles, of Davie, who passed away a number of years ago. Several children were born to this union. He is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Nannie Yarbrough Gowans, whom he married in Montgomery, Ala., on Oct. 9, 1926. Three daughters by his first marriage, Mrs. J.H.B. Dwiggins and Mrs. W.J.S. Walker, of Mocksville, and Mrs. Alice Blount, of Spencer, also survive, with 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Capt. Richard Gowans, of Asheville. The deceased had made his home in Mocksville in recent years, and was a member of the Methodist church here.
Funeral services were held at Center Methodist church on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, with Rev. R.C. Goforth, Rev. J. O. Banks and Rev. J.L. Kirk officiating. Those acting as pallbearers were: Ralph Dwiggins, Fred Walker, John Dwiggins, Ray Dwiggins, John Blount, Lonnie Dwiggins, Calvin Walker and Clyde Walker. The flowers were carried by Mrs. C.E. Dulaney, Mrs. O.T. Snow, Mrs. H.S. Walker, Mrs. Ray Shelton, Mrs. Calvin Walker, Mrs. Clyde Walker, Mrs. John Dwiggins, Mrs. Fred Walker, Misses Annie Walker, Mary Katherine Walker, Ruby Walker, Helen Walker, Ophelia Barneycastle and Johnsie B. Dulaney. The interment was in the church cemetery.
