Confederate Sailor. Brother of Major Daniel Washington Hurtt of 2nd NC Infantry, he served as a seaman on the Confederate blockade runner, CSS Merrimac, during the War Between the States. After the Merrimac was captured on July 24, 1863 by the USS Iroquios, he was imprisoned at Ft Lafayette in New York until Sept 4th, when he was transferred to Ft Warren in Boston. He remained a POW at Ft Warren until his release on August 13, 1864 following his taking the Oath of Allegience. After his release, he returned to his family in New Bern where he stayed until he died during the yellow fever epidemic in the fall of 1864.
