Joe E. Hetz, 84, Defiance, passed away Sunday morning, January 31, 2010, in his home.

He was born in Hicksville, Ohio, on March 25, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Jane (Smith) Hetz. Joe married Dorothy Kisabeth in 1945, who passed away in 1982. In 1983, he married Pauline Vetter, who passed away Nov. 29, 2009. Joe was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the 4th Degree K of C and the VFW and was an avid Ohio State fan. He was a World War II Army staff sergeant serving in the South Pacific and the Philippines. Joe had worked at General Motors as a safety director.

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy (Lee) Mack of Defiance, Sally (Greg) Newton of Mesa, Ariz., Colleen Bowling and Dorothea (Gary) Hammon of Defiance; a sister, Eleanor (Edwin) Herman of Edgerton; and a sister-in-law, Wanita Hetz of Bryan. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda Hetz; an infant daughter, Angela Rose Hetz; a sister, Marie Hetz; and a brother, Carroll Hetz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 3, with Father Todd Dominique officiating. Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery where VFW Post 3360 will conduct honorary military rites.
