Bernice Caroline (Nicolaus) Anderson, 89, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday, February 21, 2015, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Bernice was born on August 10, 1925, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Christian John and Carrie Mary (Sieling) Nicolaus. She was baptized on August 30, 1925 and confirmed on December 5, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. Bernice attended the Waverly school system graduating in 1944 from the Waverly High School. On October 5, 1946, Bernice was united in marriage to James LeRoy "Jim" Anderson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly. The couple made their home in Waverly, where Bernice worked as a dental assistant for Dr. John B. Hemingway Sr., in the lab at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital and as a homemaker. Bernice and Jim purchased a farm in 1962, where they farmed until they retired. Jim died on March 24, 2001, and Bernice continued to live in her home until 2009 when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Bernice was a faithful lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting, baking, ceramics, fishing and camping. What gave Bernice the most joy was spending time with her family and friends, especially her grand and great grandchildren.
Bernice is survived by her 5 daughters and 1 son, Mary Ann Wiertzema of Waverly, Joan (Daryl) Garner of Lincoln, Nebraska, Joe (Shari) Anderson of Waverly, Carol (Dean) Mitchell of Waverly, Laura (Mitch) Nieman of Shell Rock, Helen (Randy) DeBell of Claremore, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren, Nicole Wiertzema of Waverly, Nathan (Amber) Wiertzema of Ames, Chris (Jennifer) Garner of Lincoln, Nebraska, Matt (Lisa) Garner of Ft. Dodge, Ann Garner of Lincoln, Nebraska, David (Juanita)Garner of Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew Anderson of Waterloo, Nicolaus Anderson of Madison, Wisconsin, Jenna Anderson (Adam) of New Brighton, Minnesota, Ryan(Carrie) Mitchell of New Hartford, Kyle (Catherine) Mitchell of West Des Moines, Carrie (Matt) Billman of Cedar Falls, Phillip (Jess) Nieman of Cedar Falls, Carly (Waylen) Nieman of Shell Rock, Ben DeBell of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brad(Amy) DeBell of Claremore, Oklahoma, Daniel (Leslie) DeBell of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; 17 great grandchildren with two on the way. Bernice is also survived by many nephews & nieces and cousins of the Nicolaus and Anderson families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Carrie; her husband, "Jim", a daughter, Faye Ellen, a son-in-law, Paul Wiertzema, two brothers, Ralph Nicolaus and John Nicolaus, and two sisters, Jeanette Hamilton and Normadine Volk.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. David Schatz presiding. Burial will be held in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly where a scripture service will begin at 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, St. Jude's Children Hospital, or University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
