Gwynn, a decendent of a early Auburn merchant, had been instrumental in having Auburn park named in honor of George M. Martin. Gwynn held several important positions in the community during his lifetime. He had directed street repairs with "miles and miles of Gwynnite" and, "It was due to his (Gwynn's) activities as Chief of Police that the city (Auburn) was kept clean of slot machines during the period when slot machines were the curse of many other districts of the state."
