Mary Ann Wells was born in Nash County, North Carolina. Her parents were Redmond D. Wells and Emily Joyner.

She married Josiah Pridgen on 21 Oct 1860. Her husband enlisted in the Confederate army on 5 Jan 1862, serving with Company I, North Carolina 30th Infantry Regiment. She gave birth to Josiah Pridgen Jr., on 23 Oct 1862, while her husband was at war. Josiah Sr. died on 26 Nov 1863, without having seen his son.

Mary Ann married Pvt. Neverson Columbus Winstead on 1 Jan 1868. Mary Ann and Neverson raised her son and their 12 children. She worked on the family farm along with her husband and children. She lived 82 years and died in Rocky Mount, Nash, North Carolina.
