PILOT ROCK — Funeral Mass for William L. Futter was celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Pilot Rock. Interment was at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.

Mr. Futter, 87, of Pilot Rock, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Willowbrook Terrace in Pendleton.

He was born Dec. 12, 1917, at LaCrosse, Wash., to William and Mary Hansen Futter. He graduated from Pendleton High School and on Dec. 10, 1938, he married Alloise "Bobbie" Blanchet. The couple moved to Seattle where he built Boeing B-17's during World War II. They returned to the Pendleton area in 1944 and ran the Blanchet Ranch in Coombs Canyon until they bought their own ranch on Little McKay Creek near Pilot Rock in 1948. They raised their family on the ranch, retired in 1980, and continued to live on a portion of the ranch.

Mr. Futter was said to be a successful and innovative farmer, trying new methods to control erosion, increase yields, etc., and was always ready to help his neighbors whenever needed.

He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, and camping, especially at their camp on Bowman Creek. He was an outstanding deer and elk hunter and led many successful hunts.

He was a longtime member of the Pendleton Elks and Eagles clubs, and particularly enjoyed the Eagles Campers Club. He was a member of St. Helen's Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie, in 2000, by a son, Tom, and by a sister, Louise.

Survivors include sons, William "Bill" Futter Jr. of Dundee, Herb Futter of Ontario, and Robert Futter of Pilot Rock; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Helen's Catholic Church, P.O. Box V, Pilot Rock, OR 97868 or to Alzheimer's Association Oregon Trail Chapter: 1311 N.W. 21st Ave. Portland, OR 97209.
