Elena T. Manoliu, nee Barbu, passed away at home on Monday, January 25, 2010, at the age of 82. Elena was born in Petrovasila, Yugoslavia on March 12, 1927 and was a resident of Savannah, GA for 37 years. For the past 56 years Elena was a loving wife to Vasile V. Manoliu, whom she met in Cluj, Romania. She was a loving mother to two sons, Mircea Manoliu (Cynthia Sadkin) and Mihai Manoliu.

She is survived by her husband and children, dear cousin Ana Barbu, niece Stela Cananau (Liviu), nephew Lilu Cananau (Stephanie), sister-in-law Lucretia Barbu, and her beloved cats, Mezinul and Negruta. She was preceded in death by her dear brother Traian Barbu, cousin Elena Bure, and her parents,Trifu and Persa Barbu.

Elena had a Masters Degree in Romance and Slavic Languages, and worked as a Librarian at the University of Bucharest Central Library in Romania; after relocating to the US, she worked as a licensed practical nurse at Memorial Hospital in Savannah. Elena was a kind and gentle soul who loved all living things. She was the bedrock of her family, and her compassion, integrity, dignity, modesty, and perseverance transformed the most challenging situations into gardens of peace, freedom and creativity. Her courage, wisdom, and grace touched everyone who knew her.

Services were entrusted to Fairhaven Funeral Home of Garden City, Georgia.
