Jonathan W. Earle was the son of Calvin Earle and Eunice Whipple. He graduated in 1841 from the University of Vermont at Burlington, then taught school in western New York. In 1850 he moved to Pardeeville, Columbia County, Wisconsin and was elected to the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1858. He moved to Renville County, Minnesota in May 1862, locating six miles northwest of the Lower Sioux Agency. On 18 August 1862, during the Sioux Uprising, his son, Radnor was killed and his wife and two daughters were taken prisoner.
