Luella was the tenth and youngest child of John Gardner Abbott (1812-1886) from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and Huldah Matilda Peary (1816-1892) of Denmark, Maine. After the death of her sister Verna, she married Verna's husband Dana Hinkley, becoming stepmother to her nephew and niece. She and Dana had two more children: Ernest Carroll Hinkley (1882-1946) and Guy Manley Hinkley (1886-1963). In the 1880s, they moved from Madrid to the town of Rangeley.
