He graduated in 2000 from Kadena High School, Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, Japan, where his step-father was stationed. He was a member of the ROTC and immediately enlisted in the Army after graduation. In 2002, he served in Afghanistan and in Iraq in 2004. Among his military awards and decorations were the Bronze Star Medal (posthumously); Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; and Global War Medal. He was killed when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was part of a team that trains Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps in counter-insurgency techniques. They were on their way to attend the inauguration ceremony of a girls' school that had recently been renovated with US humanitarian assistance. Part of his job was to ensure that work on the school, which had earlier been destroyed by bombing, was completed.

He was survived by his father; his mother and step-father; hsi wife; a son; and a daughter due to be born a few months after his death.
