William (Wybe in Dutch) VanderSchaaf died Thursday morning, January 29, 1925, at four o'clock, at his home in the Holland settlement eight miles south of Manhattan, where he had lived for the past three years.

He was born in Holland February 13, 1845, and is survived by his wife, Annie VanderSchaaf, by six children and eight grandchildren and by a sister.

Funeral services will be held at the VanderSchaaf home in the Holland settlement Monday afternoon, February 2, at two o'clock, and interment will be in the Holland cemetery.

Note: William was born as Wybe van der Schaaf (= of the Plane, a carpenter's tool) on 13 Feb 1844 [not 1845 as shown on the headstone] in the Netherlands, in the northern province Friesland, in the dairy farming village Hennaard, seat of municipality Hennaarderadeel, since 1984 part of the new municipality Littenseradiel. His parents are Jacob Wiebes van der Schaaf and Hylkjen Pieters Sierdsma.

On 23 November 1872 he married in Hennaard to the five years younger Antje Kuperus, born in Winsum in the adjacent municipality Baarderadeel. Between July 1873 and August 1888 dairy cattlekeeper Wiebe and his wife got in Hennaard and Winsum twelve children: Jetske, Jacob, Douwe, Hielkje, Jan, Trijntje, Geertje, Willem, Jelle, Sjouke, Pieter, and Sjouke Pieter. Jetske died in 1890 at the age of 16 years, Trijntje in 1888 at the age of 8 years, Sjouke also in 1888 at the age of 3 years, Pieter in 1887 at the age of 1 year, and Sjouke Pieter at the age of 2 years.

On 23 March 1896, laborer (?!) Wiebe van der Schaaf arrived with his wife and their seven children Jacob (21 y, painter), Douwe (20 y, carpenter), Hietje (18 y), Jan (16 y, baker), Geertje (14 y), Willem (12 y) and Jelle (11 y) on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their destination is Passaic County in New Jersey. Five children died in the Netherlands prior to immigrating to America: Jetske Wybes (b. 26 August 1873, d. 14 July 1890); Trijntje (b. 19 March, 1880, d. 09 April 1888); Sjouke (b. 30 September 1884, d. 24 March 1888); Pieter (b. 04 August 1886, d. 18 October 1887); Sjouke Pieter (b. 23 July 1888, d. 07 May 1891).

In the USA Wybe or Wiebe van der Schaaf was usually called William VanderSchaaf.

In 1920 a William VanderSchaaf, 75 y, resided with his wife and son David (?!) in Passaic County, New Jersey. In the last three years of his life he lived with his wife in the Holland settlement, eight miles south of Manhattan, in Gallatin County in southwest Montana, just northwest of Yellowstone NP in Wyoming, where he died at the age of almost 81 years.
