His naturalization records, currently in possession of his grandson, say the year was 1889 and that he arrived in Detroit, Michigan on 9 Oct 1889 via the Allen shipping line, departing from Christiana.
Sometime after arriving Johan decided to Americanize his name to John Agen.

The couple lived on a farm near Cumberland. John earned the funds to purchase his farm by working for the Napp-Stout Logging Company as a logger. His farm was in Cumberland township, Barron County, Wisconsin.

Johanna died on 29 October 1946, age 72, in Cumberland, Barron, Wisconsin, USA. Johanne was buried in Bethany Church Cemetery, Barron County, WI.
