He was a successful planter at his "Bonny Doon Estate" in Southampton County, Virginia when elected as Democrat to represent Virginia's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1843. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death.
