LOVELY LIFE IS CONCLUDED - MRS. DELLA M. MATTINGLY, 66, EXPIRES AT HOME NEAR TOWN LAST FRIDAY
Mrs. Della M. Mattingly, wife of the late George Mattingly, former member of the Marion Fiscal Court and for many years a director of the Marion National Bank, succumbed last Friday afternoon at 1:35 o'clock at her home on the St. Mary Pike about two and a half miles from town. Death resulted from a complication of trouble with which she had been suffering for almost a year and did not come unexpectedly. The latter part of last summer, Mrs. Mattingly was first stricken and after undergoing treatment for several months submitted to an operation on October 18. The surgery revealed her condition more grave than had been anticipated and since that time she had declined steadily. Hope for her restoration to health was abandoned some time prior to her passing. Mrs. Mattingly was a native of this county, having been born on March 23, sixty-six years ago, a daughter of Perry and Josephine Thomas Mills, both deceased. She was reared in the Calvary community, where she attended school, graduating from Calvary Academy, and was a devout member of Holy Mary's Catholic Church. On January 18, 1898, she was united in marriage to Mr. Mattingly, Father Lynch officiating at the ceremony. After the couple moved to their farm on the St. Mary Pike, Mrs. Mattingly was a regular attendant of St. Charles Church, her life continuing to exemplify the teachings of her faith. Perhaps none of her characteristics was more marked than the devotion which she bore for her family. Any sacrifice which she made for their benefit was her pleasure and no hours for her were happier than when her children were by her side. All of her many friends were her admirers and even those who knew her but casually were her friends. Funeral services were conducted at 9:00 o'clock Sunday morning at St. Charles Church by the pastor, the Rev. A. J. Tompkins, and interment was in St. Charles Cemetery. Pallbearers, with one exception, were those who acted at the time of the death of Mr. Mattingly. They were Joe Beaven, James L. Elder, B. J. Elder, J. W. Jarboe, Joe B. Jarboe and Victor O'Daniel. Surviving Mrs. Mattingly are one daughter, Miss Josephine Mattingly, and three sons, Leonard, Alphonsus and Ernest Mattingly, all of whom reside in this county, the former three at home. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Albert Abell of the New Market community and one brother, J. A. Mills, of Owensboro. Mr. Mattingly died on November 18, 1930, and three children preceded their mother to the grave.
