John George Fisher Sr. was born 1804 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, the 2nd of 6 known surviving children (1 boy/5 girls) born to James Fisher (1779-1850) and his wife, Susan Cloyd (1782-1861).

The ancestry lineage of John G. Fisher has not documented by this researcher, but there are many documented Fishers in Hunterdon County, NJ, and he may be related to this branch; perhaps through the line of Tunis Fisher (c. 1751 - aft 1833) and his wife, Sarah Meloby/Malaby who lived in the area of Amwell Township. This branch of the Fishers are known to have come to NJ from Germany, settling in Amwell Township before 1725. Many Fishers are buried in Larison's Corner Cemetery there. Any corrections from Fisher researchers are gladly welcomed.

It is known this John George Fisher Sr. was in New Brunswick and found as a member of the 1st Dutch Reformed Church there as of 1830. He was 23 years old when he married 18-year old Julia Henry of New Brunswick, daughter of merchant marine, Capt. William Henry.

George and Julia would become parents of 7 known children, 2 of whom died in infancy and all but John G. Fisher Jr, predeceasing Julia in death. They were:

* Lydia Henry Fisher (1831-1832)
* John Henry Fisher (1833-1834)
* Mary S. Fisher (c. 1835-1864)
* Lydia A. Fisher (1838-1861)
* Edna Fisher (c. 1842)
* John George Fisher, Jr. (1843-1908)
* James Fisher (1846-1865)

John George Fisher Sr. died in 1858 at age 53. His wife of 30 some years survived him 19 years, passing in 1877 at age 68. Following the death of her husband, Julia remained in New Brunswick burying 3 more of her children. She then went to live with her only surviving son, John G. Fisher, Jr, in Jersey City.

Elbert C. Davis, grandson of Elbert C. Fisher offers the following information on the FISHER family, suggesting the John G. Fisher may be a descendant of John (Johannes) Fisher ca. 1736 - 1818.

The ancestry of the Fisher family is not known, but the following information I think is more likely than the scenario re Tunis Fisher of Hunterdon County.

The New Brunswick Times from 9 Oct 1818 has the following obituary:
John Fisher, butcher, died 9/2/1818. Aged 82 in New Brunswick. Lived many years in New Brunswick.
Also, Christ Church death records list the following:
Johannes Fisher - a native of Germany, in his 82 year. Entry dated 3 Sep 1818.
Ann Fisher - wife of Johannes Fisher, d. 15 Feb 1805. Entry dated 13 Feb 1805.
John Fisher appointed fire warden, Market ward in 1800, Chronicles of New Brunswick, NJ, p 55, by John P. Wall.
James Fisher and at least 3 sons were butchers by profession. James's eldest daughter was named Anna.
Johannes Fisher is listed as a family belonging to the Christ Church in Oct 1801 when Rev John Croes took charge of the congregation as rector of the church.

My brother has portraits of John G Fisher and his wife Julia Henry Fisher which I can add to the site.

Thank you,

Elbert C Davis, grandson of Elbert C Fisher
