- At a very early hour last Sunday morning
after a brief illness, Rev. George Balcom,
well known throughout the State, died at
his residence just east of town. He was
buried last Tuesday, and his funeral was
largely attended by our citizens. Elder
Scott preached the funeral services at the
M. E. Church, which was both touching
and sublime.
Mr. Balcom was one of the old pioneers
in this part of the State, arriving in this
country in 1870, and has shared all the pri-vations and hardships of a frontier life. By
his death the Baptist denomination loses
one of its most faithful and zealous workers,
and our people a citizens of inestimable worth.
It can be said of him that he did good all
the days of his life, and has converted hun-
dreds from the way so of the world do a high-
er and sacred life. The good and faithful
servant has finished his labors, his work is
done, and he rests. His absence will be
mourned in many hears, but the words of
counsel will live though the speaker has
gone. One by one the old settlers are pass-
ing away, making vacancies in our hearts
that can scarcely be filled by others. The
work has been nobly done. The command,
"Prepare Ye the Way," has been obeyed.
The husbandman has sown the seed; the
servant has improved his talent; the work
has been thoroughly done, and 'tis well.
Friends mourn for a lost friend, daughters
for a kind and affectionate father, and
wife for a noble and devoted husband. He
who doeth all things well has taken him in
the hollow of His hand, and shall keep
him where sorrow and tears shall never
come, and storms shall never beat on that
heavenly shore.
