Noted author, theologian and former Tampa pastor Paul Blanshard died Sunday at St. Anthony's hospital in St. Petersburg. He was 87. Blanshard, who was most known for his controversial books on religious freedom including "American Freedom and Catholic Power," was ordained in 1917 and served as pastor of the 1st Congregational Church in Tampa. He later left the church to become educational director for a clothing workers union in Rochester, N.Y. He was a consultant to the State Department's Caribbean Commission, helping draft its plans for that area's independence. He also served as editor of Nation magazine before moving to St. Petersburg in 1970. tn 1977 the American Humanist Association honored Blanshard for his dedication to the principle of the separation of church and state. And until last year, he contributed two columns a week to the St. Petersburg Times. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one step-daughter; one brother; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
