HARWICH — The police are searching for someone who broke into an imposing mausoleum, smashed through marble and slate walls, and opened the coffin of a woman who died a century ago.

Harwich police Sgt. Kevin Considine said Ida Chase died in 1913. She was put to rest in a grand mausoleum in Mount Pleasant Cemetery on South Street, along with her husband, a baby and two other female family members, Considine said.

In a cemetery where the legendary speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Thomas "Tip" O'Neill also lies, she rested peacefully for more than 100 years. All the relatives in the granite monument died in the early 1900s, Considine said. The police have been unable to find any living relations, he said.

Based on the size of the mausoleum — the structure resembles a small house — the family was apparently well-to-do, the sergeant said.

The family had set up a perpetual fund for the care of the mausoleum, and the grounds keepers go in and sweep occasionally, Considine said.

A group of young people driving around the cemetery Sunday made the creepy crypt discovery. They called the police at 11 p.m. and reported the Chase family mausoleum doors were open, Considine said.

Once the police arrived at the cemetery, they discovered a six-foot-long, thin piece of brass used as weather stripping on the structure had been ripped off and was missing. The grave robbers kicked the doors in, Considine said.

Once inside, the vandals broke through a marble wall and a slate wall. Then, they were able to get into Ida Chase's coffin.

The police have found few clues inside the mausoleum that could lead to any arrests, Considine said.

Ida Chase has been reduced to skeletal remains, and she had no clothes that investigators could identify, he said, adding the remains had no jewelry.

The police suspect the grave robbers believed the mausoleum contained the remains of a wealthy woman buried with her valuable jewelry, and that's what they were after. "But that's just a guess," Considine said.

Considine said he cannot remember the name of Ida Chase's husband. But it is not Caleb Chase, the wealthy coffee merchant, whose donations, including the property now housing the Chase Library in West Harwich, the town still enjoys, said Dolores Bright, the Chase librarian.

Caleb Chase married a woman named Salome, Bright said. And Caleb Chase was buried at the Pine Grove Cemetery on the Harwich-Dennis town line.

Caleb Chase did, however, come from a huge family. He was one of 17 children born to Job Chase of West Harwich, according to published reports.

It's possible, then, that Ida Chase's family may have been related to the coffee clan.

"We're just looking for information," Considine said. "We've never had anything like this happen in town. It's definitely rare."
