Abalen Edwards

ROCKLIN-Yountville resident Abalen Leppert Edwards, 93, died Sunday at her son Robert's home here.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Red Lake Falls, Minn., on June 20, 1897, to John and Olga Leppert. At about age 8, she moved to Idaho to live with her aunt who she helped with housework. She attended Laurelwood Academy and it was there that she was baptised into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She graduated from the academy and in 1919 taught a school in Modesto.

Mrs. Edwards later studied nursing at St. Helena Sanitarium where she met her husband, William Donald Edwards, a longtime resident of the area and pianist. Her husband accompanied her several times in her singing. They were married in 1922.

The couple moved to Los Angeles and Dr. Edwards interned at White Memorial Hospital. The family later returned to St. Helena where Dr. Edwards was on the medical staff from 1925-1929.

In 1929, the family moved back to Los Angeles, where Dr. Edwards worked for Los Angeles County at Rancho Los Amigos.

The family was active in assisting church and evangelic meetings in the Long Beach and Huntington Park area. Dr. Edwards conducted choirs and Mrs. Edwards sang, both in choirs as a soloist in many crusades, including those by evangelist H.M.S. Richards. They were charter members of the Lynwood church.

After Dr. Edwards passed away in 1954, Mrs. Edwards moved near Lynwood Academy where she was active in many activities. For five years, she served as assistant dean of Nurses at White Memorial Hospital. She later moved back to St. Helena and then to Yountville where she was a charter member of Signs Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Edwards enjoyed sewing and making afghans and sweaters. She also enjoyed cooking, family camping trips, the outdoors and sports.

She is survived by two sons, Calvin L., M.D., of Napa and John R. of Rocklin; a sister, Rose Rosser of Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Helen Edwards Miller, passed away in April of this year.

A private family graveside service will be held Friday at St. Helena Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Signs Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church, Yountville, with Pastors Arlin Steffes and Don Lane officiating.
