Donald Ray McKinney, 72, of Yukon, Okla., died Wednesday, March 6, 2002.

He attended Poteau High and became team captain and quarterback of the 1948 undefeated state champion football team. He later attended Eastern State University receiving his bachelor's in education and later attended SouthWestern State University earning a master's degree in Education. He served in the Air Force in occupied Japan and during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952 having achieved final rank as staff sergeant. He received the Japan Occupation Medal as well as the Korean Service Medal. He was a retired field service officer and abatement judge for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, oil and gas division. Prior to that he had been a petroleum engineer for the Birdwell Co., a subsidiary of Seismograph Service Corp. of Tulsa. He worked with the Disabled American Veterans helping the fellow disabled apply for needed benefits. He received the Oklahoma DAV's 2001 award as volunteer of the year. He worked with the Yukon Salvation Army Senior Citizens Center for the Meals on Wheels program. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Yukon.

Survivors include his wife, Ethyl Marie McKinney; three children, Deborah Painter of Van Buren, Cheryl Cuzco of Fort Smith and Derek McKinney of Vancouver, Wash.; two stepchildren, Vickie Shawcross of Higgins, Texas, and Clendon Detrixhe of Yukon; five grandchildren, W. Scott and Brett Painter, Andrew Cuzco and Rachel and Bronte McKinney; four step grandchildren, James Hill, Jill Slocum, Jody Davis and Jovah Detrixhe; one brother, William E. McKinney of Bixby, Okla. and nephew, Mark W. McKinney of Rogers.

Funeral service was held March 11 at the First Baptist Church of Yukon.

Burial with military honors was at Yukon Cemetery under the direction of Yanda Funeral Home of Yukon.
