Joe and his wife Mary Frances Perkins moved from Red Top to Sweet Water, AL when his family was still young. They lived at Sweet Water about nine years where some of the other children where born. During Joe's and Frances's stay in Sweet Water, Joe farmed and worked as a carpenter. One project he worked on was helping to build the Sweet Water School. Later, Joe and his family moved to Nanafalia, AL to pursue farming. All of the family went except the oldest child, Myrtle, who was married at this time. It was not long after the family moved to Nanafalia that Joe lost his health and was unable to work. The responsibility of a man fell on the shoulders of a lad at an early age. Alonzo, his oldest son, accepted the responsibility and stayed home from school and worked the farm with help from his brothers and sisters. It was hard on Joe and his family because the squeeze of the great depression of the 1930's was being felt in the county. Much was lost including property. Joe and his family moved to Magnolia, AL to find employment and support for the family. They rented and farmed until Alonzo got a job with the State of Alabama and bought property in Kimbrough (Nyland), Wilcox County, AL They moved to Kimbrough in the late 1930's and lived there with their son Alonzo and his wife, Vivian. The house was large and they had their own cooking and living quarters. Joe was always a lover of horses and mules and even in his old age he loved trading. They raised a fine close-knit family respected by all that knew them.
