Parents Charles and Mandy nee Sewart Shewmaker. Ambers served in the U.S. Army during world War II as a medic in France and Italy. He and his 1st wife, Eva, had two sons, Chuck and Ambers O'Neal Shewmaker.His other wives were Irene Babyak Greenwood and June Toler.

April 27, 2014, his grandson became a hero. Ambers O'Neal Shewmaker, Jr., best known as Troy Cansler, gave his life saving a woman.
