Fred Jones graduated from Linden High School and Livingston State College (Now the University of West Alabama). He served in US Navy as a pilot. During his service years he married Pat Holley. Upon separation from US Navy be became a pilot for Delta Airlines. He was shot and killed by a hijacker at the Baltimore Airport while on the ground. The hijacked had a home made bomb which he intended to be flown into the White House to kill President Richard Nixon. The plane was without fuel and unable to take off. A struggle ensued between the Head Pilot and the hijacker. Multiple shots were fired and Fred was mortally wounded by a single shot to his head. His twin sons were probably less than a year old at the time of his death.
Freddie was a pilot for Delta. He was the first American pilot killed by a high jacker.
There is an airport named after him.
