Richard Lorence Colson was born on September 29, 1934, in New Orleans, LA, to the late Aris Lorence Colson and the late Katherine Walton Colson. He graduated with honors from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, LA in 1952.

He then attended and graduated with honors from Loyola University in New Orleans, LA in 1956. He went on to attend Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans, graduating in 1959. He then proudly served our Nation in the United States Navy while interning at the United States Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD. From there he continued to serve our Country for the next three years at the 8th Naval District Dispensary in Algiers, LA. He completed his service for our Country in 1963 at Belle Chasse Naval Air Station in Belle Chasse, LA. Upon retiring from the United State Navy, he performed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, LA from 1963 to 1966.

He moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast with his family in 1967 to begin his private practice with Gaddy, Gaddy, and Colson. He continued his practice with Gaddy, Gaddy, Colson and Raines before opening his own private practice, the Colson Clinic for Women in 1983. After humbly serving and delivering over 10,000 babies on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, he begrudgingly retired his practice in November 1999. Upon his retirement, the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport honored him by adopting a Resolution of Appreciation recognizing the many contributions to the provisions of health care to the residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and for providing guidance and counsel to both the Hospital and its Medical Staff in their growth and progression over the years.

During his lifetime, he was a dutiful member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons. He served multiple terms as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. He was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church in Gulfport, MS. He also was a loyal member to the Gulfport Yacht Club. He was a proud member of both the Jesuit Alumni and the Louisiana State University Alumni Associations. He thoroughly enjoyed carnival season as a member of both the Gulf Coast Carnival Association and the Krewe of Pegasus in New Orleans, LA.

He will be missed greatly by his family. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Colson of Gulfport, MS; his son, Stephen Richard Colson and his four children, Richard Lane Colson, Anna Clare Colson, Christian Luke Colson, and Elizabeth Grace Colson, all of Biloxi, MS; his daughter, Katherine Marie Colson and her three children, Lorence Anson Ballow, Bradford Alden Macomber, and Connor Macomber, of Long Beach, MS; his step-daughter, Deborah Anderson and her two children, Hamilton Joseph McCarthy and Nicholas Colson Catalanotto, of Gulfport, MS; and his step-daughter, Patricia Leigh Goodwin of Orlando, FL. He is further survived by his sister, Peggy Harmon, of Metairie, LA and his brother, Robert Colson, of Metairie, LA.
