Educated at the American College at Rome; ordained at Rome. Appointed Assistant to the Cathedral of St. Andrews, Grand Rapids, Michigan, in August, 1889. Administrator of St. Andrew's Cathedral (1889-1917). Superintendant of Mount Calvary Cemetery (1893). Pastor, St. Mary's Church, Grand Rapids (1917-1920). Rector, St. Mary's School, conducted by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Executive Board, Grand Rapids Anti-Tuberculosis Society (1909). Author of "How to Get Married" (1912); "How to Teach our Little Ones" (1940).

Rev. Schmitt took it upon himself to provide for the religious needs of the Italian-speaking residents of the city of Grand Rapids. Through the mediacy of the first Bishop of Grand Rapids, Henry J. Richter (1838-1916), Rev. Schmitt sponsored Rev. Salvatore Cianci to emigrate from Italy and serve as the first pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Grand Rapids.
