Lemuel J. Westbrook, one of Newark's most highly respected and well known pioneer business men passed away this morning at 2:10 at his home, 348 East Main Street.
Mr. Westbrook, the son of Alfred A. and Sarah (Wise)Westbrook, was born at Temperanceville, OH, Dec 20, 1844. He came to Newark in 1863 and went immediately into the grocery business in which he has since been. For a number of years he had conducted a grocery in East Main Street which since his illness has been managed by his son, Amzi A. Westbrook.
On May 17, 1864, he was married to Elizabeth Oatman, eight children were born. .
In 1882, Mrs. Westbrook died and January 2, 1887 Mr. Westbrook was united in marriage with Alice L. Beckham of Fallsburg. Of this union three children were born.
Five brothers and three sister survive.
The deceased was a faithful member of the Methodist Church. He was known for his many acts of kindness and did a great deal of charity work, though in a quiet and unassuming manner. He was a man it was a pleasure to know and who to meet him was to honor and like him. His friends are innumerable, all of whom will regret to learn of his demise and extend their sympathy to the grief stricken family. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from his late home, 348 East Main Street. Rev. Locke of the East Main Street M.E. Church will officiate and burial will be at the Barnes Cemetery near Wilkins.
