On Thursday, February 4, 2010, our beloved, Vernon B. Morgan of Hoo Hoo Hollow, Lester, died at Princeton Community Hospital following a three-week illness. He was 81 years of age.

Born Vernon Burb Morgan on June 12, 1928, at Isaban in McDowell County, he was the 4th of five children born to the late Burbage Morgan (Deceased) and Virgie Allen-Morgan (Deceased). His sister, Irma Morgan-Lester (Deceased), and brothers, Madison Morgan (Deceased) and Ray Morgan (Deceased), also preceded him in death.

Vernon spent his childhood at Isaban. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. A resident of Lester the past 37 years, he was of the Christian faith. A coal miner, Vernon had over 40 years in the mining industry, retiring from AT Massey, Elk Run Division. He was a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge #95 AF&AM.

He was a talented bluegrass musician; his children and many friends would meet weekly at his home to play bluegrass.

Vernon was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Joan Carol League-Todd-Morgan (1937-2007), whom he married in 1971.

Left to cherish his memory are his children. He was "Dad" to daughter, Verna Morgan-Leadbetter of Lester, and sons, Jim Morgan and his wife Linnie of MacArthur, Donald Morgan and his wife Missi of Glen Daniel, Matthew Morgan, Greg Todd and Brian Todd and his wife, Dee Dee, all of Lester; the doting Paw Paw of eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; the fond brother of Velma Foster of Atlanta, Ga.; a large extended family, many neighbors, friends and fellow musicians.

Funeral services will be Sunday, February 7th, at 1 p.m. in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dale Birchfield officiating. Committal services will be at 3 p.m. at the Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Matheny. The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of the service on Sunday. Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

And so now we must say goodbye. "His memory is blessed." Although gone from our sight, forever in our hearts you will live.
