Orson married Delilah Valissa Stowers in Clinton County, Iowa, on 31 March 1858. He enlisted as a private in Company F, 18th Indiana Volunteer Infantry at Indianapolis on 16 August 1861 and was discharged at Indianapolis on 16 August 1864. He contracted rheumatism from sleeping in the rain at Booneville, Missouri, on 1 October 1861. He and Delilah homesteaded 160 acres of land, on 13 February 1891, at Hayes County, Nebraska but moved to Waverly, Nebraska afterword. He died at the Soldiers and Sailors Home at Milford, Nebraska. His disability pension went from $12.00 per month on 7 February 1887 to $30.00 per month on 22 May 1912.
