Note: Married lst, Sophia Woods, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Vaughn Woods. History of Maries Co, MO by Everett M. King, page 795 & 796: Three sons were born of this marriage, of whom John O., the oldest and best known, survives, and lives at Rolla. He taught school in the western part of the county in his young manhood, after which he read law and was admitted to the bar, practicing several years in Maries County and serving two terms as Probate Judge before his removal to Rolla about 1904. He continued his law practice there and also served three terms as Probate Judge of Phelps County, and is now retired from active practice. Of his four children by his marriage with Sarah Sundermeyer, who has been dead several years, William H. lives in Vienna, where he practices law and has served as Prosecuting Attorney. A. B. the youngest son, also a lawyer, lives at Rolla, and has been Prosecuting Attorney of Phelps County. Oliver W., the third son, lives near Rolla, and Mollie, the only daughter, is the wife of Sam H. Hess, present Probate Judge of Phelps County.

George W., the second son of William W. Holmes, lived in this county some years after his marriage to a daughter of William Martin. Afterwards they moved to Granite City, Illinois, where both he and his wife died some years ago. Clay Holmes, his son, lives in St. Louis. His daughters are: Mrs. Minnie Couch, Mrs. Florence Winters, Mrs. Lucy Richie, and Mrs. Ora Richie, all of Granite City; and Virgie, married name unknown, who lives in Michigan.

Richard L., the third son of William W. Holmes [and Sophia], was born June 7, 1864, and died December 6, 1930. His wife was Effie Harney, a descendant of the Indian-fighting General of that name, and daughter of a noted Methodist minister. He was for many years one of the leading teachers of this county. He later moved to Greene County, still later to Jackson, and died in St. Louis.

Mrs. Holmes survives and makes her home in St. Louis, as does her daughter, Ruth, who is a graduate nurse. Of the remaining children, Guy, is in the west. Maud is married and lives on a farm near Springfield. Thomas A. lives in Illinois, and the other daughter, May, in Montana.

After the marriage of William W. Holmes to Sophia, daughter of Major Samuel Woods, he settled in Maries County at or near Stony Point, and after a number of years moved to the Little Maries above Brinktown, where he made his home until his death December 29, 1886". After the death of his first wife William W. Holmes married Lucinda[Cindrella] Marrow, by whom he was the father of five daughters, Irenda, Jessie, Lucy, Sophronia, and Mattie Holmes. Irenda and Mattie died in infancy. After the death of Mr. Holmes his widow and the remaining children moved to the Springfield neighborhood, where she died. Lucy, who was born December 18, 1879, returned to this county and taught school a number of years before her marriage to Ethan A. Rohr; she died February 9, 1916, childless. Sophronia married a Lyles and lives at West Plains, as does Jessie [Wm. Jesse, not female-mar. Katherine Boyd], whose married name is not known".
