Benajah Ticknor was the son of Benajah Ticknor (b. CT) and Bethiah Bingham (b. CT), born in Jericho, Vermont.

He married Gesie Bostwick. They adopted a child, Rhoda (Ticknor) Hine and raised two of his sister Sophia's children -Lois Camp (Ball) Ticknor and Frances Elizabeth (Ball) Ticknor.

Dr. Ticknor was a surgeon in the Navy, having graduated from the Berkshire Med. Institute in 1838 and having received an honorary medical degree from Yale in 1836. He and his wife lived in Brooklyn, New York before retiring to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"He (Benajah Ticknor) married Miss Getie (sic) Bostwick, a daughter of a deceased Episcopal Clergyman of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, a lady of unusual merit. He had no children but educated several children, some of whom survive him."
