Obituary: The Rev. Dr. Joseph B. Hennessey,68, of Allentown,PA., Lehigh County, a pastor in the United Church of Christ, died Friday, April 25, 1997, in Lehigh Valley Hospice, Allentown, where he was admitted early that day, after a four year fight against cancer.

He was born May 25, 1928, in Lodi, OH., a son of the late Rev. Dr. Joseph B. Sr. and Gleena E. (Archer) Hennessey. Hennessey was the husband of Dorothy L. (cooley) Hennessey. In addition to his wife; surviving are three sons, John M. of Spring Township, Berks County, Paul R. of Soth Whitehall Township, Lehigh County; and James C. of Northampton, Northampton County. Also surviving are a sister, Peggy J. and husband, Harrold W. Guthrie of Green, near Akron, OH; a brother, Albert L. of Bradenton, FLA.; two granddaughters; two grandsons; and eight nephews. A daughter, Joanna Joy, died of cancer in 1991, at age 21.

Hennessey was ordained May 29, 1955, at Miller Avenue UCC, Akron, Ohio, by his father, who was pastor there for many years.

He graduated from Lancaster Theologiccal Seminary, Lancaster, with a doctor of ministry degree in 1977 and a master of divinity in 1973 and a bachelor of divinity in 1955; Pennsylvania State University with a master's in speech in 1960; and Kent State University, Kent, OH, with a bachelor of arts in 1952

Hennessey was pastor of Dubbs Memorial UCC, Allentown, from 1979 to 1991, when he retired.Other pastorships were at First Reformed UCC, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, from 1973 to 1979; St. Paul's UCC, Selinsgrove, Snyder County from 1960 to 1973; and Christ UCC, Roaring Springs, Blair County, from 1955 to 1960.

After retirement, he served interim pastorships at St. Peter UCC, Topton, and Christ UCC, Bowers, both in Berks County, from 1995 until this yeat Trinity UCC, near Mt. Bethel, Northampton County from 1994 to 1995; and New Jerusaleum Zion UCCC, Krumsville, Berks County, from 1991 to 1993. While at Allentown, he served as pastor and vice moderator and on the board of directors of the Penn Northeast Conference and as special delegate to the General Synod. While at Selinsgrove, he served as president and vice president of the Central Association of the Penn Central Conference, on the conference board of directors, and as a delegate and alternate delegate to the General Synod. He also led several trips to the Holy Land while at Allentown and Greensburg.

Most recently, he was a member of the St. James UCC, 15th and Walnut Streets, Allentown.

Viewing will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the TREXLER FUNERAL HOME, Allentown, PA and Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. James UCC. Services will be Wednesday at a 11 a.m. at St. James UCC, Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery, South Whitehall Township, near Allentown, PA.
