George E. Carlton (Carleton) of Rasin enlisted on November 17, 1862, at the age of 33. He was discharged by Government Order No. 26, dated June 3, 1865, and is buried in Lenawee County at the Holloway Cemetery, Raisin Twp. George was born in Vermont on April 3, 1829, and died on August 7, 1901. George's brother, Henry, may have also served in the war and his younger cousin, Will Carleton, was a famed poet. Will's writing was featured in the Twenty-sixth Michigan's section of General John Robertson's Michigan in the War. (Will Carleton's cobblestone house is still preserved in Hillsdale County.)After the Civil War, George and Mary named their son, Willie, in May of 1867.

26th Michigan service included: Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg including Deep Bottom, Ream's Station, Cedar Level Station, White Oak Swamp & Hatcher's Run, Fort Fisher, Sayler's Creek & Farmville, Appomattox and The Grand Review.
