John was the son of Jacob Balthazar and Rhoda B. "Rody" Roberts Kanatzar. He married 1st Emily "Emma" Hanks on August 2, 1870 in Decatur Co, IN. From this union were no known children. He married 2nd Luranie R. "Lou" Gentry on March 17, 1884 in Cass Co, MO. From this union were born five known children: an unnamed infant, Margaret Bartleson "Maggie" Jones, Joseph Gentry "Joe", Nannie Elizabeth May and Gibson.

John was a twin to sister Frances Ann "Fannie".
