13th New Jersey Governor, US Congressman. He served as Governor of New Jersey from 1837 to 1843. He was elected as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1859 to 1861. From 1860 to 1861 he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, the only New Jersey Congressman do ever do so. He was the son of 10th New Jersey Governor William Pennington, Sr., and the cousin of New Jersey Congressman Alexander C.M. Pennington.
