Cecil Foy Hardee, 87, of New Bern passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009, surrounded by his children and their spouses.

Born on June 11, 1921, at Simpson Creek Township, S.C., to George Franklin Hardee and Ann Lillian Carter Hardee, Cecil graduated from Loris High School in Loris, S.C., in 1938. After leaving the family farm in 1941, he worked at the Charleston Shipyard prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Seabees in the Tarawa and Eniwetok campaigns and was honorably discharged in 1945 but remained as a Navy reservist.

Cecil married Martha Jane Steadman on October 24, 1947, with whom he had four children prior to her death on June 25, 1965. He then married Nancy Elizabeth TenVoorde VanWyck in November 1965 enlarging his family to include two stepchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Ruth Hardee Klich of New Bern; his son, Cecil Foy Hardee Jr. and wife, Lucy, of Manassas Park, Va.; his daughter, Susan Leonette Hardee Gillispie of New Bern; his son, David Carter Hardee and wife, Debi, of Serena, Ill.; his stepdaughter Nancy Carolyne VanWyck of New Bern; and 12 grandchildren, Joe, Rachel, Lindsay, Teresa, Lori, Tammi, Vicki, C, Chris, Richard, Michael, and Seth.

Cecil is also survived by three brothers, George Leonard Hardee and his wife, Carolyn, of Columbia, S.C., Edward Edison Hardee and his wife, Melvina, of Florence, S.C., and Roger Wesley-Hardee and his wife, Mary Ann, of Loris, S.C., and three sisters, Jane Elizabeth Hardee Rausch and her husband, Robert, of Vero Beach, Fla., Althea Nell Hardee King of Loris, S.C., and Linda Diane Hardee Smith and her husband, Eddy, of Charleston, S.C.

After returning from service in the Pacific during World War II, Cecil worked in South Carolina as a welder before moving to northern Virginia to work as a mechanical contractor. In 1969, he and his second wife, Nancy Elizabeth Hardee, started Heritage Heating and Cooling. Cecil was an active member of Fairfax Host Lions Club, serving as president and was awarded Lion of the Year. He sold his business and traded in his tool belt for a set of golf clubs, becoming an avid golfer and golf fan until his death. He moved to New Bern in 1995.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Martha Jane Hardee, his wife, Nancy Elizabeth Hardee, his stepson John Edwin VanWyck and one brother, James Lloyd Hardee.

Cecil will be remembered by his family and friends on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern, N.C. The Reverend Mary Frances Curns will officiate. Cecil's ashes will be interred with military honors in Memory Chapel on the grounds of the church.
