She was born in Washington, D.C., on March 6, 1924. She was a member of the first graduating class of Coolidge High School in that city in 1942. She married John Briggs VanWyck in 1945 and moved to Charleston, W.Va., for the next 17 years. They had two children, Nancy Carolyne and John Edwin. She returned to the Washington, D.C., area in 1962. In 1965 she met and married her loving and devoted husband of 43 years, Cecil Foy Hardee, and embraced four more children: Nancy Ruth, Chuck, David and Susan. Together, in 1969, they established Heritage Heating & Cooling of Fairfax, Va., which thrived for over 20 years.
She was known far and wide for her organizational skills and business acumen. For the next 30 years, she combined her family responsibilities and business duties with active affiliations to many volunteer organizations. From 1972-1989, she was a member of the City of Fairfax Chamber of Commerce and was elected the first woman president in 1978. From 1977-1978, she chaired the organizational committee for the formation of an auxiliary for Commonwealth Doctors Hospital in the City of Fairfax. During that time, she also worked to organize and open a thrift shop to benefit this hospital. From 1979-1989, she was appointed representative of the City of Fairfax to Northern Virginia Community College. From 1980-1984, she served as chairman of the Building Sites Committee of the college and was instrumental in launching several satellite campuses of the largest community college system in the state of Virginia. From 1982-1985, she served three terms as vice chairman of the college board. From 1985-1987, she served two terms as chairman of the college board. From 1980-1988, she served on the board of directors of the College Educational Foundation, serving as its president from 1981-1984. In the capacity of her work for the college, she traveled nationwide to both attend seminars and also to contribute information used for the expansion of many more state community college systems.
During these years, she also managed to serve as president of Women In Construction (Washington, D.C., chapter), and president of Soroptimist International of Fairfax. In addition, she was a member of the City of Fairfax Economic Development Task Force and a member and past treasurer of Fairfax Professional Women's Network and a member of the Altar Guild at St. Barnaby's Episcopal Church in Annandale, Va. She was awarded "Woman of the Year" once. After retirement, they relocated to River Bend and joined Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern, where she served for many years on the Altar Guild. She was also active in Episcopal Church Women and its branch, St. Frances.
She was predeceased by both of her parents and her son, John Edwin "Bo" VanWyck. She is survived by her husband, Cecil; her daughters, Nancy Carolyne VanWyck, Nancy Ruth Klich and Susan Gillespie; and sons, Chuck Hardee and David Hardee; along with 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
