Frank Braun was born in Nuestadt [Neustadt?] an der Haardt. Married Sophie Hardrath and was the last surviving Civil War Veteran in Manitowoc. He served in Company "D", 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, wounded at the battle of Perryville and captured at Chickamagua [Chickamauga?}. He spent 14 months in Andersonville Prison before escaping and returning to Manitowoc. All public schools were closed for his funeral where 4 horses pulling a caison traveled through the streets to Evergreen Cemetery.
